How to Choose a Pearl Necklace Length

The right necklace length depends on your proportions, neckline and preferred fit. A number in centimetres is useful, but it cannot tell you exactly where a necklace will sit on everyone. The most reliable starting point is a piece you already enjoy wearing.

Measure a necklace that fits

  1. Lay an existing necklace flat and measure its wearable length from clasp to end.
  2. If it has an extension, measure the setting you actually use.
  3. Put it on with the neckline you have in mind and note where it sits.
  4. Compare that measurement with the chain length on the product page.

You can also use a soft measuring tape or a length of string to explore a comfortable position around the neck. Keep it loose enough to move naturally, then measure it flat. Do not pull it tight to achieve a particular number.

Check what the stated length includes

A 43 cm chain with a 5 cm extension offers a different range from a fixed 45 cm chain. A pendant hangs below that chain and adds to the overall drop. Check the product description for both measurements when available. If it is unclear whether an extension is included in the stated length, ask before ordering.

Choose for the way you will wear it

Try a closer-fitting style against an open neckline or compare a longer pendant with a shirt or knit you wear often. These are styling options, not fixed rules. For layering, measure both necklaces and leave enough space that their pendants do not repeatedly overlap.

If you are buying a gift, a known favourite necklace gives a better reference than guessing. An extension may offer flexibility, but it does not guarantee a suitable fit for every person.

Compare the pendant too

The pendant adds length below the chain. Check its measurements where listed, and use worn photographs as a guide rather than a guarantee of fit. Browse pearl necklaces.

These are the chain measurements listed for specific designs, not promises about where they will sit on your body.
