Yes, a real pearl can have a baroque shape. “Baroque” describes an irregular form; it is not a promise of a particular origin, grade or value. A shape alone cannot establish what a piece is made from, so the product description matters.

Real does not mean wild

Cultured pearls are real pearls grown with human assistance. They should not be confused with wild natural pearls or imitation beads. A freshwater cultured pearl can have a baroque shape. See our freshwater and baroque comparison for a closer explanation.

Look beyond a perfectly round outline

Shape is one part of a pearl's character. GIA considers size, shape, colour, lustre, surface, nacre and matching when evaluating pearls. An irregular outline alone therefore does not establish quality or price. Its pearl quality guide gives context for those factors.

When choosing jewellery for yourself, decide which outline you enjoy and how it works with the setting. A broad pearl and a narrow pearl can make very different pendants. Examine the photos, then compare actual measurements. Do not assume that a close-up represents life size.

Questions worth asking before buying

  • What pearl type is specified?
  • What metal is used for the chain, setting and fittings?
  • Are dimensions and an adjustable range provided?
  • Is the photographed item representative, or the exact piece being sold?
  • What colour or surface variation should be expected?
  • If origin or treatment is important to you, what information can the seller confirm?

Words such as “iridescent” describe appearance; they do not by themselves prove an untreated colour. Photographs and home tests cannot replace an appropriate professional examination when identification is needed. Avoid scratch tests that could damage jewellery.
